Rodents

Rodents are a nightmare for any homeowner in Middle Georgia. Just the knowledge that a mouse or rat is in your home can ruin your sleep, not to mention the many diseases these pests can transmit and the rate at which they reproduce. Middle Georgia residents deserve to know about effective rodent control, and what they can do when rodents invade.

If you find yourself dealing with a rat or mouse infestation, you’re probably asking yourself, How did these pests get in my Middle Georgia home? Let’s talk about why rodents are so dangerous and what Middle Georgia property owners can do to control an infestation.

Rodent Identification Tips

The most common area rodents to slip into Middle Georgia households are mice and rats. Many people use these two terms interchangeably, but rats and mice are different types of rodents, and each one can cause different problems to your household.

Mice are rodents that typically grow between 2-4 inches in length. They have soft, rounded bodies, and fur that ranges between gray, black, and brown. Mice have rounded ears, four legs, flexible toes, and a pinkish tail.

Rats, by contrast, can grow up to a foot in length. They tend to have darker fur, pointed faces, and smaller ears compared to mice. Rats also tend to have leaner bodies, and their tales have a scaly texture.

The following four rodents are the most common to invade Middle Georgia homes:
  • House Mice: varying in color and size, though they tend to have smaller ears and grow between 2-4 inches.
  • Deer Mice: compared to house mice, deer mice have gray-brown fur and larger ears.
  • Roof Rats: these rodents have pointy faces, grow between 5-7 inches, and are dark brown, dark gray, or black.
  • Norwegian Rats: growing upwards of 11 inches, these rats have more rounded faces compared to roof rats, and also have much lighter fur.

The bad news is, all of these rodents are trying to get into households like yours. The good news is, two rodent species very rarely cohabit the same property, so if one of these pests has found their way into your house, you'll know what to expect from your infestation.

What Makes Rodents So Dangerous?

Rodents can bring some nasty diseases into your Middle Georgia property. Because these pests will forage for food, including in places like trash cans and dumpsters, rodents collect an assortment of pathogens that they later share with the properties they infest. Common rodent-borne diseases include salmonella, tularemia, giardia, diphtheria, dysentery, and the plague.

Rodents transmit these diseases in multiple ways. They might break into your pantry and infect your food storage, or they might transmit disease through their urine and feces. Rats and mice can even spread disease simply by walking through your property.

Needless to say, your family is better off without any rodents nearby. However, when rats or mice make a home in your property, they’re notoriously difficult to get out.

Getting Rid Of Your Rodent Infestation

Rodents will do anything they can to stay in your house. As a source of both food and shelter, your property is the perfect environment for them to live and spread germs.

Part of the reason rodents are difficult to exterminate is that they are so good at hiding. Rats and mice will create nests in hard-to-reach places, such as crawl spaces, attics, and vents. Additionally, rodents reproduce quickly; in fact, you might not know you have an infestation until your rats or mice have produced several generations.

Because their populations grow quickly, commercial rodent treatments do not get rid of the problem. Cats, rat traps, and poisons will only target a few unfortunate members of the rodent population.

What you need is the comprehensive response of exterminators; the experts at Blitz! Exterminators, LLC can help. Our treatment targets the entire rodent population seals up all possible entry points and follows up regularly to keep these disease-spreading pests out.
