Stinging Insect Identification Guide

What are stinging insects?

Stinging insects, including bees and wasps, have stingers coming off the end of their abdomens. They use their stingers as a means of defense, or to inject venom into their prey. When not living in our yards or close to our homes, stinging insects are useful. Predatory species help to control many species of nuisance pests, and those that feed on plant nectar are responsible for some pollination.

Are stinging insects dangerous?

Stinging insects become dangerous when they decide to place their nests in, on, or near our homes. Though not all stinging insects are super aggressive, they will defend themselves or colony from threats by delivering painful stings. Stinging insects pose a danger to people because their venom is strong enough to trigger allergic reactions, and to those that are very allergic, anaphylaxis may occur.

Why do I have a stinging insect problem?

Stinging insects are opportunistic pests and will make themselves at home on any property they find suitable, including our yards. They are most attracted to properties with plenty of food sources, sheltered places to build their nests, and sources of water.

Where will I find stinging insects?

Where stinging insects will nest depends on the species. Carpenter bees prefer to build their nests in untreated pieces of softwood and prefer cedar and pine. Fences, decks, and wooden play structures are common carpenter bee nesting sites. Carpenter bees are outdoor pests and are rarely found inside homes, but will nest on the exterior of a house.

Wasps like to build their nests in the protected areas under overhangs or decks, or between rocks and in woodpiles. They may also build their nests in trees, on utility poles, or in door frames.
